The GAC for ICANN just killed the .xxx TLD (top level domain). It appears based on the correspondence from GAC Chairman to ICANN Board that too many other governments have expressed concern over the proposal.
The .xxx TLD was an idiotic and Orwellian idea at its best moments. It’s nice to see saner heads step in and quash the the notion of segregated Internet. One of the greatest problems with .xxx is that once it existed, governments would believe they would be able to mandate that all xxx material should ONLY exist in .xxx. Furthermore, America’s version of xxx would be very different from the Holland or Sweden or China or Iran version. This type of content segregation is antithetical to the functioning of the Internet and to the open sharing of information.
