From Clown to Sideshow Act
Well, it seems that Judy Baar Topinka has found that not even she can control Alan Keyes. Last night Keyes labeled homosexuality ‘’selfish hedonism” and said Vice President Dick Cheney’’s lesbian daughter is a sinner. Today Topinka called Keyes” statments “idiotic” and called on him to apologize. Keyes, of course, rejected the call. Keyes” pronouncements come at an awkward time, as the Republican party tries to put forth it’s convention message of compassionate conservatism.
Though Keyes’ comments pander well to the religious conservatives that he was brought in to help bring to the polls, he is quickly alienating moderate Republicans here in Illinois. It’’s hard to imagine that Topinka will retain the state party leadership once this fiasco is finished. Though it is somewhat humorous to see Topinka’’s hand-picked dog nip at her ankels, the selection of Keyes will no doubt remain the low point of the Illinois Republican party for years to come.
